Sanctuary lattice gate with bolt lock

 

Central Europe, late 15th century

 

Malleable iron. The lap-jointed forged iron bands are riveted at the intersections. Bolt lock and hasp forged onto the support. Key guide hammered into a trefoil. The ends of two bands are forged and curved into a hollow rolled cylinder for the ring mount. Parts of the lock and the rosette rivet washers have been gilt.
